The Company of the Ironwolf gathered in sadness on Saturday, March 26 at 7pm to bid farewell to one of our
own: Lady Emma St John (Nancy Simpson). In her memory, we wore a quarter inch wide black ribbon diagonally from the upper left
corner to the lower right corner, across the face of the
wolf, on our household favors until after Pennsic.
Which corner is the left corner? Answer
adapted from explanation by our Midrealm Dragon Herald, Lady Kriemhelt :
An easy way to remember right (dexter)
and left (sinister) for blazoning (describing in heraldese). The blazoning
is based on the shieldbearer, not the onlooker.
Picture a right handed fighter with sword
and shield, like Sir Osric. The side of the shield (bearing his arms) that
is closer to his sword hand is dexter (at his right hand), the default.
The side of the shield near the outside of his body is his sinister (his left)
side.
The "default corner" of the shield is nearest the fighter's shield
hand. Picture a strapped shield, and you can envision this being the top
left corner from the onlooker's point of view. That's where a bend originates
- which is what we are putting on our favor's.
Where is the best place to be in relation to our fighter?
On Sir Osric's good
side! ;) }
